Turn your home into a solar power station!

What is solar energy?

Solar energy is the energy produced when solar photo-voltaic panels (or solar PV panels) turn sunlight into direct current electricity (DC electricity). This electricity can be used to power most of your domestic appliances, such as your kitchen appliances, your TV or your phone for example.

As your home will be producing a certain percentage of the electricity you use, you will become less reliant on buying electricity from your utility supplier. As a result, you will save money on your electricity bills!

You will also help reduce your carbon footprint by reducing your consumption of electricity produced from fossil fuels such as coal or oil. Finally, you could also improve the BER rating of your property, which in turn can help increase its value.

What is a solar energy system comprised of?

A solar energy system is comprised of 3 main components, which combine to turn your home into a source of free, renewable energy.

Solar photo-voltaic panels: transform daylight into direct current electricity (DC). The output of solar PV panels is measured in kW (kilowatts).

DC / AC inverter: converts the direct current into alternating current (AC), which is the type of electricity used in your home.

– Battery: enables the system to store any excess electricity, for use at a later stage. To avail of the SEAI grant, a battery must be installed as part of any system above 2 kW.

Alternately, surplus electricity can be used to heat the water in your immersion tank or can be sold back into the national electricity grid.

An SEAI registered installer will be able to advise you as to what type of system is best suited for your home, install the system for you and help you apply for the SEAI solar electricity grant.

Rebate amounts available

Solar PV panels

You can receive 700€ per kW of solar PV panel installed, up to 2 kW for systems without a battery and up to 4 kW for systems with a battery.

Battery storage system

You can receive up to 1000€ for the installation of a battery storage system.

Example 1:

For the installation of a solar electricity system comprised of 12 panels with a total power output of 4 kW and a battery storage system, a homeowner would be eligible for a grant of 4 * 700 = 2800€ for the solar panels plus 1000€ for the battery. In total, the amount of the grant would be 2800 + 1000 = 3800€.

Example 2:

For the installation of a solar electricity system comprised of 6 panels with a total power output of 1.8 kW and a battery storage system, a homeowner would be eligible for a grant of 2 * 700 = 1400€ for the solar panels plus 1000€ for the battery. In total, the amount of the grant would be 1400 + 1000 = 2400€.

Example 3:

For the installation of a solar electricity system comprised of 2 panels with a total power output of 1 kW without a battery storage system, a homeowner would be eligible for a grant of 1 * 700 = 700€ in total.
