SEAI solar grant 2026

How much SEAI pays towards solar panels, by system size, with and without a battery.

Free, no obligation. One local SEAI-registered installer prices it, not five.

  • €1,400SEAI grant for 2kWp of panels
  • €2,400most you can get, with a battery
  • 0% VATon solar panels for homes

SEAI pays €700 per kWp for the first 2kWp of solar panels, so €1,400 for 2kWp, about 6 or 7 panels, and €200 for each extra kWp up to 4kWp, so €1,800 at 4kWp, the cap for panels. A battery of 5kWh or more adds a flat €600.

The most you can get is €2,400: €1,800 for 4kWp or more of panels plus €600 for a battery.

€2,400 SEAI grant

Panels about €5,000 to €8,200 after the €1,800 panel grant

€1,800 for 4kWp of panels (about 12 or 13 panels) plus €600 for a battery of 5kWh or more on a semi-detached house. At SEAI's typical €1,700 to €2,500 per kWp (€6,800 to €10,000 before the grant), the panels come to €5,000 to €8,200 after the grant, plus €1,300 to €2,400 for a 5 to 10kWh battery less its €600 grant. 0% VAT.

5kWp15 or 16€1,800€1,800€2,400

SEAI's grant rules and its own 2kWp, 3kWp and 4kWp examples. Panel counts above 2kWp scale SEAI's "6/7 panels" for 2kWp; panel sizes vary.

How the sum works

€700 for each kWp up to 2kWp, then €200 for each kWp from 2 to 4, paid pro rata. So 2kWp gets €1,400, 2.5kWp €1,500, 3kWp €1,600 and 4kWp €1,800, the cap for panels. A 5kWp system also gets €1,800.

A battery of 5kWh or more adds a flat €600 on top, so the most a home gets is €2,400.

What changed in 2026

A separate €600 grant for a home battery, and the age rule widened to homes built and occupied before 2025. Older SEAI leaflets still show the earlier rates, so don't rely on them for the grant.

Questions people ask

Does a bigger system get a bigger grant?

Only up to 2kWp without a battery, and up to 4kWp with one.

Is the battery grant inside the €1,800 panel cap?

No. The panels get up to €1,800 and the battery's €600 comes on top, so €2,400 at most.
