The post-works BER

After the panels go in, an SEAI-registered BER assessor rates the home. It's part of the grant claim.

Free, no obligation. One local SEAI-registered installer prices it, not five.

  • €1,400SEAI grant for 2kWp of panels
  • €2,400most you can get, with a battery
  • 0% VATon solar panels for homes

After the panels are fitted, an SEAI-registered BER assessor does a post-works BER. It's needed to claim the grant, and there's no set rating to reach. A battery-only grant, where the home has no panels, doesn't need one.

What the rule says

A post-installation BER by an SEAI-registered BER assessor is required for the grant. A battery-only grant, where the home has no solar panels, doesn't need one.

Will panels lift my BER?

Panels lower the home's calculated energy use, so they lift the rating. There's no set rating to reach for the grant: the BER records the result. A better BER helps when you sell or rent the home.

To lift the rating further

  • Attic and wall insulation usually move a BER more than anything else.
  • SEAI has separate grants for insulation and heat pumps.
  • Each has its own grant, and they can be done in any order.
