- €1,400SEAI grant for 2kWp of panels
- €2,400most you can get, with a battery
- 0% VATon solar panels for homes
SEAI puts the typical cost at €1,700 to €2,500 per kWp. So 2kWp is about €3,400 to €5,000 before the grant, and €2,000 to €3,600 after it; 4kWp with a battery is about €5,000 to €8,200 for the panels after the €1,800 panel grant, plus the battery less its €600. These are SEAI's typical rates times the size, not quotes.

€1,800 SEAI grant
About €5,000 to €8,200 after the €1,800 grant
€1,800 for 4kWp of panels (about 12 or 13 panels) on a semi-detached house. At SEAI's typical €1,700 to €2,500 per kWp (€6,800 to €10,000 before the grant), that leaves €5,000 to €8,200 after the grant, with 0% VAT on solar panels for homes.

| System | Typical cost (SEAI's rate) | Grant, no battery | After the grant |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2kWp | €3,400 to €5,000 | €1,400 | €2,000 to €3,600 |
| 3kWp | €5,100 to €7,500 | €1,600 | €3,500 to €5,900 |
| 4kWp | €6,800 to €10,000 | €1,800 | €5,000 to €8,200 |
| 5kWp | €8,500 to €12,500 | €1,800 | €6,700 to €10,700 |
SEAI's typical €1,700 to €2,500 per kWp times the size, less the grant. A guide, not a quote. 0% VAT on panels for homes.
With a battery
| System | Panels, typical cost | Panel grant | Panels after the grant | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3kWp | €5,100 to €7,500 | €1,600 | €3,500 to €5,900 | its price less €600 |
| 4kWp | €6,800 to €10,000 | €1,800 | €5,000 to €8,200 | its price less €600 |
| 5kWp | €8,500 to €12,500 | €1,800 | €6,700 to €10,700 | its price less €600 |
The battery isn't in these sums: a 5 to 10kWh battery typically adds €1,300 to €2,400, less its €600 grant.
VAT
Supplying and fitting solar panels to a private home has had a zero rate of VAT since 1 May 2023. Ask the installer how VAT applies to a battery on your quote.
Use it to check a quote
A quote well above SEAI's €2,500 per kWp isn't wrong on its own (a hard roof, scaffolding, a long cable run or a diverter add cost), but ask what's driving it. A quote well below the €1,700 line deserves the same question about the panels, inverter and warranty.
